January Happenings in the Duke City

The new year starts off with some fun things to do.  For music we’ve got Robert Earl Keen, who’ll be putting on a smoking show up the road at Skylight Santa Fe. Here in town Bela Fleck plays the KiMo and the NM Philharmonic shakes it down at Popejoy Hall. Comic Con and a Bike & Brew tour are also on the calendar – check the full one out below.  Happy New Year and have fun!

Comic Con Comes to Albuquerque

5th Annual Albuquerque Comic Con, Jan. 9-11; 9 am – 6 pm; Hotel Albuquerque; Admission: $15, $25, $30

New Mexico’s Comics and Comics in Film convention will feature media and comic guests second to none. Along with plenty of futuristically medieval and generally skimpy outfits, there will be vendors, media and panels, gaming, celebrity autographs and photo ops. Comic Con

The Show at The Box

While we’re talking comics, it take cojones to stand in front of an audience, invite them to toss ideas or scenarios at you and then improvise those for laughs. The improv troupe at the Box Performance Space has ’em and does it. The Show runs every weekend in January, starting at 9 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Ten bucks for lots of yuks. New Mexico Philharmonic Classic Concert: The Seasons, Jan. 11; 2 pm; National Hispanic Cultural Center; Admission: $24-$68

David Felberg returns as both soloist and conductor in Vivaldi’s virtuosic and beloved The Four Seasons. Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings follows with conclusion featuring the “Holberg” Suite by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. NM Philharmonic

New Mexico Philharmonic Classic Concert: Fumi Plays Tchaikovsky, Jan. 24; 6 pm; Pope Joy Hall; Admission: $20-$68

Get ready for a jaw-dropping performance from 20-year-old violin phenomenon Fumiaki Miura. Performing Tchaikovsky’s exhilarating Violin Concerto No. 1, Andrew Grams conducts this evening of gems, including Enescu’s sensational Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, and Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra – a 20th century masterpiece. NM Philharmonic

Cowboys & Indian, Sister Bar, 407 Central Ave: Jan. 10; 8 p.m., $5

Cowboys & Indian bring their Rockin’ Hillbilly sound back to Sister Bar for their own show.  Check out this smokin’ band in a great space for live music. Full bar with extensive beer offerings. Sister Bar

Tracey Whitney Trio, ABQ Museum of Art, Jan 24, 2 p.m. Free

Memphis P-Tails, Monte Vista Fire Station, Wednesdays, January, 8:30 p.m. Free

And, after a few holiday weeks off, the Memphis P-Tails are back in rotation hosting their Wednesday night blues jam at the Monte Vista. These jams are generally tight and solidly in the pocket.
