December Happenings in the Duke City

We’ve got some pretty cool happenings in the Duke City this December. For music we’ve got the Wailers playing at the Launchpad on Central and right down the street Leo Kotke plays a show at the KiMo Theater. The KiMo also hosts the Howlin Holiday Jam 2014 late in the month and over at the Convention Center Ryan Adams & Jenny Lewis will tear it up.

Burquenos can enjoy the  Nutcracker on the Rocks at the National Hispanic Cultural Center, White Christmas at the Little Theater, as well as Holiday Strolls in Old Town and on Nob Hill. Click Continue Reading to, well, continue reading…

KiMo Theater: Various Dates

Duke City’s big screen gem the KiMo Theater has some great offerings in December. Leo Kottke plays on December 4 and the P-Tail’s Jeff Sipe is part of the Howlin Holiday Jam 2014 on December 27th. The UNM Chorus’s “Home for the Holidays Concert” and the Ballet Repertory Theatre’s “The Nutcracker” also will be featured. On the big screen you’ll get the holiday classic “A Christmas Story”and “Back to the Future” movie trilogy and much more.  Go here for a full calendar.

Performance: Outpost! Performance Space – Various dates

As always, Outpost has a great schedule lined up for December.  Highlights include the Six of One Sextet featuring Glenn Kostur, pianist Eliane Elias playing both a general concert and a Jazz Club Style benefit event, and the Kids Variety Show – by and for kids of all ages, featuring music, comedy, dance & theater .  More information at Outpost!

Nob Hill Shop & Stroll – December 4

Filled with mostly locally-run businesses, Nob Hill is a great destination for shoppers who know that buying local helps our local economy thrive. For the event, Central Ave. will be closed to traffic from San Mateo Blvd. to Girard Blvd. from noon until midnight. The event will include shopping and food specials, family entertainment, and photos with Santa.

Old Town Holiday Stroll – December 5

The annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in Don Luis Plaza kicks off a delightful evening of entertainment, dining and shopping. The luminarias and twinkle lights fill the air with Holiday spirit during this classic and time-honored Albuquerque event. Purchase this year’s collectable lapel pin and receive a discount for your purchases at participating merchants. All proceeds from the lapel pin sales go directly to local charities. Performance: 18th Annual Nutcracker on the Rocks – December 5- 7; National  Hispanic Cultural Center

In Keshet Dance Company’s 18th Annual Nutcracker on the Rocks, traditional meets contemporary for an exciting and magical holiday event. Opening with the traditional Tchaikovsky Overture and closing with his dramatic Pas de Deux, the classic tale is re-imagined with a production filled with rock and roll hits by Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin and many more. Modern dance styles infused with Swing, African, and Hip Hop propel the dancers as they amp up the energy and excitement. And of course, no modern retelling of the Nutcracker can be complete without the thrill of a roaring Harley Davidson roaring onto the stage during the opening act. NHCC

Twinkle Light Parade – December 6; 5:15 p.m.; Nob Hill

Kick off your holiday season with Albuquerque’s festive holiday parade. The parade will travel west on Central Ave from Washington St. View the parade between Girard Blvd and Washington St.

Ryan Adams & Jenny Lewis – December 8; 7:30 p.m.; Kiva Auditorium

Ryan Adams’ self-titled new album is the first to be released on the combined Pax Am/Blue Note imprint. Produced by Adams himself at his own Pax Am Studios in Los Angeles, the new record is the North Carolina-born singer/songwriter’s first full length outing since 2011’s acclaimed “Ashes & Fire.” Jenny Lewis, one of the most celebrated and respected performers of her generation, has been called “the best songwriter working today” by Rolling Stone editor Joe Levy. AMP Concerts (narrative courtesy of Duke City Fix)

Performance: White Christmas –  December 5 – 21; Every Friday, Saturday, Sunday; Albuquerque Little Theatre

Based on the beloved, timeless film, this heartwarming musical adaptation features seventeen classic Irving Berlin songs. The ABQ Little Theater’s original production of White Christmas in 2009 remains, to this day, the most popular musical in ALT history! ABQLittleTheatre

River of Lights – Dec. 1 thru Jan. 3rd; ABQ Bio Park 6:00- 9:00 pm

Experience millions of glowing, sparkling lights and over 150 dazzling light displays, animated sculptures and synchronized music light show at New Mexico’s largest walk-through holiday production. Closed December 24 and 25.   ABQ BioPark

Gildan New Mexico Bowl – Dec. 20th; 12 p.m.; University Stadium

The ninth annual New Mexico Bowl will once again be the first game played in college football’s bowl season. The game will feature a team from the Mountain West Conference against a team from the Pac-12 Conference.  NMBowl
