Cool Duke City Happenings in March

Shake off the winter doldrums with some fun events in the month of March. Music, movies and spicy food are what mainly caught our eye. Cool gigs from Alien at the KiMo Theater to Dengue Fever at the Launch Pad (in April, actually, but WTH).

Alien at the KiMo Theater
Friday, March 20th, 6:00 & 8:30 (Aliens, 1986, Friday March 27th, 6:00 & 8:30)
This is one of our great modern horror/SciFi flicks and while the plot may not have been spectacular, the set design and pacing was. Sigourney Weaver put on a hell of a performance, too. So don’t watch it again on your TV no matter how big or def. Here’s a chance to catch it on the big screen surrounded by cattle skulls with glowing eyes. The KiMo will be screening Alien for two showings and the following week screening Aliens, the second of the trilogy. See the movie like it was meant to be seen in ABQ’s best theater.

Tribal Seeds at the Sunshine Theater
Sunday, March 15th, doors at 7:00, show at 7:30. $15 (advance)
Award winning reggae from San Diego, California. Come on out to their Spring Roots Tour Duke City whistle stop and get your skank on. Easy skankin…

Vijay Iyer Trio at the Outpost! Performance Space
Thursday, March 26th, 7:30. $20 – $25
New York based composer and pianist Vilay Iyer and his longtime bandmates Stephan Crump, bass, and Marcus Gilmore, drums, will knock your socks off with their innovative jazz. This should be one of the stronger shows this spring in the always strong lineup of the Outpost Performance Space. Don’t miss it.

Sunset Hour with Tracey Whitney & Calvin Appleberry
March 18th, 6:00. Free
Two sets of jazz and classic soul.

Memphis P-Tails Blues Jam at Monte Vista Fire Station
Wednesday nights, weekly, 8:30. FREE
One of the area’s best blues bands hosts this weekly night of great blues with lots of musical guests sitting in and mixing it up. Downstairs.
[No Website to Link – I mean, seriously, right?]

27th Annual National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show, Sandia Casino
March 6-8, Friday 4-8 pm, Saturday 11 am-7 pm, Sunday 11 am- 6pm. $15
Over 200 booths filled with more than 1,000 products related to chile peppers will be set up. Enjoy samples of spicy foods, plus find great books, clothing and decorator items. Because, well, it’s Albuquerque and we need to feed our chile/chili addiction.

Mahlers 5th Symphony at Popejoy Hall
March 28th, 6:00. $68 to $20
Starting off with Mozart’s Overture to Don Giovanni, followed by Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2 and concluding with Mahler’s colossal Symphony No. 5. This is the Heavy Metal of symphonic music. Ilya Kaler on violin for a great evening of classical music.

Dengue Fever at the Launch Pad
April 2, Doors at 8:00, Show at 9:30. $13 (advance)
Here’s your chance to catch Dengue Fever – not the breakbone kind, the L.A. Psychedelic Cambodian Pop Surf kind. Much more fun.
